At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer.

We are professionals with purpose, beating cancer every day. But we need to go much further and much faster. That's why we're looking for someone talented, someone who wants to develop their skills, someone like you.

It's an exciting time to be joining Cancer Research UK's growing Retail (Trading) directorate who are crucial to the charity's success by inspiring one million daily bargain hunters to join us in our mission of beating cancer (in 2022/23, we invested £107m on our stores which raised an incredible £127m towards our lifesaving research). These teams rely on several retail technologies which is why we are searching for a Retail EPOS Technology Manager to join our Trading Strategy and Planning team.

This role will act as the bridge between Retail and Technology by giving a voice to Trading's user needs and future technology development. You will do this by supporting the maintenance and development of Trading's technical roadmap while continually reviewing processes to ensure Trading teams can operate and use technology efficiently and compliantly. This will involve scheduling changes, enhancements, and fixes to EPOS and retail systems and services while acting as the product expert and point of contact for retail technology. Therefore, this role combines retail operations and processes with an understanding of EPOS systems and retail technologies (both software and hardware).

This is an opportunity for you to collaborate and build relationships with our Technology directorate and store network to deliver retail technology initiatives at both a localised and national level. No day will be the same- you will meet with stores, warehouses, offices, and suppliers to walk in their shoes and understand the performance of our retail technologies, improve user experience, and identify what systems need developing or scoping for the future. Through these relationships and your technical knowledge, you will ultimately support Cancer Research's strategy, Trading's long-term plan, and our stores' business-critical technical infrastructure.

What will I be doing?

  • Supporting the development and delivery of Trading's technical roadmap which will involve scheduling changes, enhancements, and fixes to retail technology systems and services.
  • This includes championing improvements to till/ Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) devices and associated software and hardware for 600+ stores throughout the UK.
  • Supporting and advising on complex technology projects within Trading by helping to identify success measures, collaborating with project teams/stakeholders, building business cases, and providing updates to the Operational Support Manager and Strategy & Planning Manager.
  • Supporting the short and long-term objectives and outcomes relating to retail technology in line with Trading's strategic priorities.
  • Collaborating with the Operational Support Manager to support the day-to-day management of Trading's EPOS system ensuring a high-quality supporter experience and service levels.
  • Engaging directly with store and regional Trading staff to gather more information about and advise on EPOS system queries, fixes, and issues.
  • Using technical knowledge to support Trading teams with system changes or operational activities.
  • Understanding the different types of user access control groups for Trading systems (such as till software, owning the change control process, and ensuring end users have the correct systems access).
  • Assisting the Service Delivery Manager in Technology with security and compliance activities (e.g. user activity monitoring and annual PCI DSS compliance audit).
  • Providing insight on how technology can facilitate Trading at Cancer Research UK to achieve its goals.
  • Supporting the Operational Support Manager in updating Trading's technical roadmap (e.g. key milestones and deadlines) and communicating updates to the Trading Senior Leadership Team.
  • Helping to collate Trading technology data for procurement and request for information (RFI) activities.
  • Supporting the Strategy & Planning Manager and wider Trading department to plan and produce an annual operating plan and organise monthly operations meetings.

What skills will I need?

To be considered for this role, you must have the right to work in the UK as we are not able to offer visa sponsorship for this role.

  • Experienced retail or technology product management or retail systems professional with demonstrable knowledge of Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) systems and retail technical requirements.
